Introduction

If the goal is to improve analytical skills, assessment should measure whether people can analyse realistic problems rather than whether they can recall information or recognise the “right” answer from a list. Authentic assessment is built on this principle. Instead of relying mainly on short-answer tests or multiple-choice questions, it asks learners to investigate evidence, make judgements under realistic constraints, justify their reasoning and produce work similar to what analysts, professionals or informed citizens actually do. Use real-world tasks and products

Authentic assessment asks learners to demonstrate understanding through tasks that resemble meaningful work outside the classroom. The emphasis is not simply on making assignments more interesting, but on requiring learners to integrate knowledge, evidence and judgement in situations where there is rarely one perfect answer. Grant Wiggins’ influential description of authentic assessment argued that performance should be examined directly rather than inferred through proxy questions. For analytical skills, suitable assessment products include:

  • Policy briefs based on conflicting evidence.
  • Business recommendations supported by quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Scientific investigations using imperfect datasets.
  • Risk assessments with explicit uncertainty.

Reward framing, evidence use and judgement

Strong analytical assessment does not reward only arriving at an acceptable answer. It rewards the quality of reasoning that produced it.

Effective assessment criteria commonly examine whether learners:

  • Defined the real problem rather than answering an easier substitute.
  • Identified relevant and irrelevant evidence.
  • Considered alternative explanations.
  • Recognised uncertainty and limitations.
  • Justified trade-offs.
  • Communicated conclusions clearly for an intended audience.
  • Reflected on how new evidence might change the decision.

These criteria shift attention away from reproducing information towards making defensible judgements. This is particularly important because many authentic analytical problems have multiple reasonable solutions. Many universities use detailed analytic rubrics to make these expectations explicit. The Association of American Colleges and Universities’ VALUE (Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education) rubrics, for example, assess outcomes such as critical thinking through dimensions including explanation of issues, use of evidence, evaluation of assumptions and reasoned conclusions rather than factual recall alone. Importantly, assessment criteria should reward intellectual behaviours that often remain invisible in traditional examinations, such as revising an initial judgement after encountering contradictory evidence or acknowledging uncertainty where certainty is impossible.

Avoid tests that train only recall

Traditional examinations remain useful for assessing foundational knowledge. Analytical thinking, however, is difficult to infer from tests that primarily ask learners to remember definitions, identify formulas or select one correct option.

Recall-based tests often encourage:

  • Recognition instead of explanation.
  • Speed instead of reflection.
  • Certainty instead of calibrated judgement.
  • Individual facts instead of integrated reasoning.

Someone may correctly identify statistical terminology yet struggle to interpret a messy dataset. Likewise, they may remember the definition of confirmation bias while repeatedly displaying it during a genuine investigation.

This does not mean factual knowledge is unimportant. Analytical reasoning depends upon domain knowledge. The issue is proportionality. When assessment is dominated by recall, learners naturally devote most effort to memorisation because assessment signals what counts. Authentic does not simply mean “more realistic”

Modern research has highlighted an important limitation in early discussions of authentic assessment. Simply copying workplace tasks does not automatically produce better assessment.

Recent scholarship argues that authenticity can be understood in several ways. A task may be authentic because it resembles professional practice, because it feels meaningful to learners, because it develops sound judgement or because it connects learning to wider social purposes. For example, requiring students to imitate every feature of a professional analyst’s job may overwhelm beginners. A carefully simplified case that preserves genuine analytical decisions while reducing unnecessary complexity may produce stronger learning than a perfect simulation.

The question becomes not “Does this look exactly like real life?” but “Does this require the same kind of thinking that real life requires?”

Governance choices shape what learners value

Assessment is ultimately a governance decision. Institutions decide what counts as evidence of competence, how success is recognised and what behaviours receive rewards.

If assessment systems allocate most marks to recalling information under timed conditions, they encourage efficient memorisation. If they instead allocate substantial credit to evidence evaluation, justification, revision of judgement and communication, they create incentives for learners to practise those analytical behaviours consistently.

This does not require abandoning traditional examinations altogether. Many programmes combine foundational knowledge tests with authentic performance tasks, recognising that analytical competence depends on both knowing relevant concepts and using them effectively. The critical policy question is whether the overall assessment system measures the thinking that society, employers and learners actually value.

Authentic assessment therefore serves not only as a measurement tool but also as a signal of educational priorities. It tells learners that analytical skill means applying knowledge with judgement, evidence and reflection in situations that resemble the complexity of the real decisions they will eventually face.
