Introduction
When a relationship matters, generosity is usually a strength. Most healthy relationships require people to give each other the benefit of the doubt, forgive occasional mistakes and recognise that everyone behaves badly sometimes. The difficulty is knowing when generosity has stopped being a virtue and has become a way of protecting a preferred story. Confirmation bias can quietly turn patience into evidence avoidance: each new warning sign is explained away so that the relationship still fits the hopeful narrative already formed.[UC San Diego Pages]pages.ucsd.eduUC San Diego Pages Confirmation Bias: A Ubiquitous Phenomenon in ManyUC San Diego PagesConfirmation Bias: A Ubiquitous Phenomenon in Many…October 6, 2004 — by RS Nickerson · 1998 · Cited by 12455 — Confi…
The practical question is not whether people should be charitable. It is whether they apply the same standards to their own relationship that they would apply if the same pattern were happening to someone they cared about. That distinction helps separate reasonable optimism from selective interpretation.
How hope protects a relationship story
Most relationship concerns do not arrive as dramatic revelations. They emerge through a sequence of ambiguous events: a cancelled plan, an angry outburst, repeated dishonesty, a promise that is not kept, or a pattern of emotional withdrawal. Each incident has a plausible explanation on its own.
Because relationships involve trust and emotional investment, people often interpret these events in the most favourable light. Someone who wants the relationship to succeed may naturally think:
- “They were under unusual stress.”
- “Everyone has flaws.”
- “This isn’t who they really are.”
- “Things will improve once work calms down.”
None of these explanations is necessarily wrong. The problem arises when the explanations become automatic regardless of the evidence. Confirmation bias encourages people to collect reasons that preserve the preferred conclusion—”this relationship is fundamentally healthy”—while giving less attention to observations that point elsewhere.[UC San Diego Pages]pages.ucsd.eduUC San Diego Pages Confirmation Bias: A Ubiquitous Phenomenon in ManyUC San Diego PagesConfirmation Bias: A Ubiquitous Phenomenon in Many…October 6, 2004 — by RS Nickerson · 1998 · Cited by 12455 — Confi…
Importantly, charitable interpretation should become more confident when behaviour improves. If explanations remain unchanged even after repeated disappointments, the interpretation has stopped responding to evidence and has become a defence of the existing belief.
The close-friend comparison test
One practical way to interrupt confirmation bias is to compare your judgement with the advice you would give a close friend.
Imagine someone you care about describing the following pattern over several months:
- Their partner repeatedly lies about small matters.
- Promises are often broken.
- Difficult conversations end with blame or contempt.
- Apologies rarely lead to lasting behavioural change.
Would you advise your friend to be more patient, or would you begin to question the relationship itself?
This comparison works because psychological distance reduces the emotional pressure to defend the existing relationship. When judging a friend’s situation, there is less investment in preserving hope, less fear of loneliness and less temptation to justify sunk emotional costs. The standards that suddenly seem obvious from the outside can reveal how confirmation bias has been operating from the inside.
The exercise should not become a rule that every disagreement is a “red flag”. Instead, it asks whether identical evidence receives different interpretations solely because one case is personally important.
Patterns deserve more weight than explanations
People often overvalue explanations and undervalue repetition.
An isolated incident can usually be understood in several ways. A repeated pattern is much harder to dismiss.
For example:
- One forgotten anniversary may reflect distraction.
- Five years of consistently forgotten important occasions suggest a stable pattern of priorities.
Similarly:
- One angry argument after exceptional stress may not reveal much.
- Repeated contempt, ridicule or humiliation across ordinary disagreements tells a different story.
Research on long-term relationships supports paying attention to enduring interaction patterns rather than isolated episodes. The work of the Gottman Institute identifies recurring communication behaviours—notably criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling—as especially damaging when they become established features of conflict rather than occasional lapses. Contempt, in particular, has consistently emerged as one of the strongest predictors of relationship breakdown.[The Gottman Institute]gottman.comthe four horsemen recognizing criticism contempt defensiveness and stonewallingThe Gottman InstituteThe Four Horsemen: Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness…10 May 2026 — Identify the Four Horsemen in your conflict d…
The analytical lesson is simple: explanations should be judged against the stability of behaviour. If the explanation changes every time while the behaviour stays the same, the behaviour deserves greater weight.
When generosity becomes evidence avoidance
Healthy relationships involve assuming good intentions until evidence suggests otherwise. Evidence avoidance begins when the standard for changing one’s view keeps moving.

- Every concern is treated as an isolated exception despite obvious repetition.
- Promised changes are accepted without checking whether behaviour actually changes.
- Friends or family repeatedly notice patterns that the person in the relationship dismisses.
- Clear standards gradually become weaker because enforcing them might threaten the relationship.
- New information is interpreted differently depending on whether it supports staying together.
These are examples of selective interpretation rather than deliberate self-deception. People are often genuinely convinced that each explanation is reasonable, even while overlooking the cumulative picture. Confirmation bias operates through many small interpretive choices rather than one conscious decision to ignore reality.[UC San Diego Pages]pages.ucsd.eduUC San Diego Pages Confirmation Bias: A Ubiquitous Phenomenon in ManyUC San Diego PagesConfirmation Bias: A Ubiquitous Phenomenon in Many…October 6, 2004 — by RS Nickerson · 1998 · Cited by 12455 — Confi…
Attachment, vulnerability and over-interpreting red flags
Avoiding confirmation bias does not mean becoming suspicious of every imperfection.[britannica.com]britannica.comconfirmation biasDefinition, Examples, Psychology, & Facts11 Jun 2026 — Confirmation bias, people's tendency to process information by looking for, or int…
Attachment research shows that people differ in how they perceive closeness, rejection and security. Individuals who are especially anxious about abandonment may detect danger too readily, while others may tolerate unhealthy behaviour for too long in order to preserve connection. Attachment patterns influence how people interpret relationship events, but they do not determine whether a particular relationship is healthy or unhealthy.[PMC]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPMCContributions of Attachment Theory and ResearchNIHby J Cassidy · 2013 · Cited by 792 — In this article we focus on the documented antecedents and consequences of individual diffe…
That distinction matters because “red flag” language is easily misused. A single awkward conversation, a personality difference or occasional conflict is not, by itself, reliable evidence of an unhealthy relationship. Likewise, attachment theory should not be used as a shortcut explanation for every disagreement.
Good judgement depends on examining behaviour over time rather than diagnosing people from isolated moments.
Practical standards that reduce confirmation bias
Rather than asking, “Can I explain this?”, ask questions that require evidence to distinguish between competing stories.
Useful questions include:
- Has the behaviour changed after previous conversations, or only the promises?
- Would I interpret this the same way if it happened to someone I cared about?
- Am I evaluating the pattern or only the latest incident?
- What evidence would genuinely change my mind in either direction?
- Am I becoming more confident because behaviour is improving, or simply because I have become accustomed to it?
These questions shift attention from defending hope to testing it. They do not require cynicism. They simply require that optimism remains responsive to evidence.
The aim is not to search constantly for reasons to end a relationship. It is to ensure that patience remains an informed choice rather than a habit of explaining away patterns that would look unmistakable from the outside.
