The skill is not simply “think more”, but “match the thinking to the stakes”. This classification is not mechanical. The same action can fall into different categories depending on context. Common Failure Modes
The stakes-and-reversibility check is simple, but it can fail in predictable ways.
Mistaking emotional intensity for objective stakes. Anxiety can make a reversible choice feel permanent. A useful counter-question is: “What would actually happen if I changed my mind?”
